Bed Bug Facts
What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are nocturnal insects that feed exclusively on blood to survive. They prefer human blood but can also survive on the blood of domestic animals such as dogs or cats.
Habitat
Bed bugs spend as much as 90% of their life hiding deep within cracks and crevices of bedding and soft furniture, only emerging for short periods of time to feed on blood.
Appearance
When unfed, bed bugs range in color from light tan to mahogany brown depending upon what stage of life they’re in. After a blood meal, they have a reddish appearance.
Lifespan & Reproduction
Bed bugs typically live for 300 days or more. A mated female bed bug typically lays 2-5 eggs per day, for a total of 200-500 eggs in her lifetime. This makes it easy for bed bugs to quickly establish themselves, multiply in large numbers, and survive for long periods of time.
Signs Of Bed Bug Infestation
The first sign of a possible bed bug infestation is often a bite. Bed bug bites can be rash-like or itchy welts that can become inflamed in people who are allergic.
Other signs of infestation include bed bug excrement, shed skins, or small blood spots on bed linens or a mattress. The excrement is dark brown or black spots that create a pepper-like appearance on a mattress or box springs.
Bed bugs also shed their skin when they molt as they grow. These shed skins may be found near the excrement spots. Of course, seeing a bed bug itself confirms their presence, but this is rare.
How Did I Get Bed Bugs?!
Unfortunately, you’ll likely never know. It’s a common misconception that bed bugs are only found in dirty or unkempt places. In reality, bed bugs have survived for thousands of years because they spread easily and can establish themselves in any structure near a blood source.
Bed bugs can move from infested furniture or other areas by hitching a ride in luggage, backpacks, or another item that’s placed on soft or upholstered surfaces. This can easily happen in a public setting such as a bus, school, hospital, library, or movie theater.
Multi-unit properties such as hotels and apartment complexes are especially vulnerable to bed bugs, because they can easily travel between the rooms.
Once inside, bed bugs gravitate toward their preferred blood source (humans) and the places we sleep. Bed bugs’ secretive lifestyle allows infestations to often go undetected for months. This allows the population to grow and makes control efforts even more difficult
How We Treat for Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to control, and every situation is different; however, Maximum Pest Management has proven solutions.
Typically, we apply multiple pesticides mixed with an insect growth regulator where the insects live and travel. For effective control, we recommend both an initial and a follow-up treatment to get rid of bed bugs.
The field service rep will also provide laundering instructions and other recommended steps customers can take to help prevent the spread. Using a cotton or poly-blend bed bug cover for the mattress and box springs is also strongly suggested.
