Silverfish Facts
What Are Silverfish?
Silverfish are small, silver insects with a tapered body. They’re about half an inch to one inch long, with long antennae and three tail-like extensions at the end of their bodies.
Silverfish are nocturnal, meaning they’re active at night. They like to live in warm, dark places with high moisture, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and basements.
Silverfish feed on materials like clothing, books, paper, starchy foods and foods with lots of protein. They’ll eat cardboard boxes, dead insects, beef jerky, insulation, and entire books, including the binding. They’re often found in containers of flour, pasta or oats.
Signs Of Silverfish Infestation
A true infestation of silverfish is uncommon, but there are signs that silverfish are in your home or business.
Since they’re nocturnal, you may not see silverfish often, but you might find holes in unexpected places, like cardboard boxes, food packages and clothing.
You may also find chewed-up books, magazines, newspaper, and even wallpaper.
Other signs of silverfish include yellow stains and finding metallic shed skins.
Ways to Prevent Silverfish
As with other pests, eliminating access to food, water and places to live will help prevent silverfish in your home or business. Seal food packages tightly in airtight containers. Use plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes for storing items in the basement. And vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture regularly to get rid of silverfish eggs.
If there are any leaky pipes in your home or business, fix them as soon as possible. Make sure there are no areas of pooled water around your home’s exterior to attract silverfish. If necessary, use dehumidifiers in the basement if it’s damp.
Use caulk or expandable foam to seal entry points where silverfish could get into your basement or walls.
How We Treat for Silverfish
First, we’ll inspect your home for signs of silverfish and their eggs. Depending on our findings, we’ll recommend a pest control treatment plan to get rid of silverfish and keep them from coming back. Our pest control treatments include both the interior and exterior of your home.
